Partial Knee Replacement Available on Whidbey
Whidbey General orthopedic surgeon Dr. Mario Porras has performed more than 160 partial knee replacements.
Partial Knee Replacement
Partial knee replacement, or unicompartmental knee arthroplasty, is a procedure used to treat severe arthritis. A surgeon replaces damaged parts of the knee, while ligaments and cartilage unaffected by the arthritis are conserved.
The goal of the surgery is to decrease pain and improve the ability of the knee to function properly. Partial knee replacement may be appropriate when arthritis is confined to a single area of the knee. Compared with total knee replacement, partial replacement may involve quicker recovery and less pain after surgery.
Until recently, Whidbey residents who wanted a partial knee replacement needed to travel off island.

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Mario Porras joined our medical staff in 2013 after maintaining a successful practice in Reno, Nev., for 35 years. He has extensive experience in trauma care, sports medicine and joint replacement.
“Dr. Porras is awesome, easy to talk with, and very approachable. He takes the time to listen, even seems to know what is hard to articulate. He thoroughly explains all options in understandable language. In spite of all he deals with, he manages a sense of humor, an admirable trait that keeps things in perspective.”
Dr. Porras specializes in partial knee replacements using the Oxford Arthroplasty System, which may be suitable for patients who have knee problems but who are not ready for a total joint replacement. There are a large number of patients on Whidbey who are candidates for this procedure, Dr. Porras has found. "I feel it would be appropriate for them to have it done on the island so they can have close follow-up," he says.
Understanding that effective care requires effective communication, Dr. Porras listens closely to patients in determining diagnosis and treatment. He takes the time necessary to understand patient needs and sees himself as partnering with patients to produce the most favorable treatment outcomes possible. He prides himself on avoiding surgery whenever less invasive treatment can meet patient needs. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.
